Why this exists.
It was 110 degrees when the power went out again at my home in California. Wildfire smoke was visible on the horizon. The risk stopped being theoretical. Heat, outages, and fire were becoming too common to ignore.
I started looking at climate risk the way you look at any long-horizon constraint: exposure, grid reliability, freshwater access, and what stays livable as conditions shift. After searching for months, a near-perfect property was made available to us and less than 48 hours later the deal was signed — a well-built home on over 20 acres, thousands of feet of shoreline on the largest body of freshwater in the world, a private sandy beach, a square lot at the end of a dead-end road with soil good enough to grow things. Three years later, I haven’t seen a single property that’s a better fit for us. Cairnhold exists to help others act with that same clarity before it becomes unattainable.
